World Religions: Questions Answered

Questions people from other faiths, or no faith, often ask, with short answers from Scripture. Type a word to filter.

Islam

1. Muslims believe Jesus (Isa) was a great prophet, but not God's Son and not God. Why isn't honoring Him as a prophet enough?

Jesus didn't leave that option open: He claimed to be one with the Father and to give eternal life Himself (John 10:28-30; 8:58). A prophet points to life, but Jesus said He IS the life, and whoever believes in Him has it (John 11:25-26; 6:47).

I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

John 10:28-30 (WEB)

Jesus said to them, “Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM.”

John 8:58 (WEB)

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

John 11:25-26 (WEB)

Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life.

John 6:47 (WEB)

2. The Qur'an says Jesus wasn't really crucified (Surah 4:157). Why trust the Bible's account?

The crucifixion is attested by eyewitnesses writing within decades (1 Cor 15:3-8), and Jesus Himself predicted it (Mark 8:31). If He didn't die for sin, there's no payment, and the gift rests entirely on His death and resurrection (Rom 4:25).

For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers at once, most of whom remain until now, but some have also fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all, as to the child born at the wrong time, he appeared to me also.

1 Corinthians 15:3-8 (WEB)

He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

Mark 8:31 (WEB)

who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.

Romans 4:25 (WEB)

3. On Judgment Day God weighs our good deeds against our bad. Isn't that fair?

A scale only measures, it doesn't cleanse, and God's standard is perfection, which none of us meets (Jas 2:10; Rom 3:23). The good news is that Christ paid for sin in full, so the one who believes is credited with righteousness apart from works (Rom 4:5; 3:24-26).

For whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

James 2:10 (WEB)

for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;

But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.

Romans 4:5 (WEB)

being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus; whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance; to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time; that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus.

Romans 3:24-26 (WEB)

4. Isn't it arrogant to claim you KNOW you're going to Paradise? Only God knows.

God does know, and He told us: the one who believes has eternal life now (1 John 5:13; John 5:24). Confidence in God's promise is humility, because it trusts what He did rather than what we did (Eph 2:8-9).

These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

1 John 5:13 (WEB)

John 5:24 (WEB)

for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (WEB)

5. God is one. How can He have a Son? Isn't the Trinity three gods?

Christians agree that God is one (Deut 6:4; Mark 12:29). Calling Jesus the Son doesn't mean God had a wife or offspring; it describes the eternal relationship of the Word who was with God and was God, and who became flesh (John 1:1, 14).

Hear, Israel: Yahweh is our God. Yahweh is one.

Deuteronomy 6:4 (WEB)

Jesus answered, “The greatest is, ‘Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one:

John 1:14 (WEB)

6. Wasn't the Bible corrupted, so the Qur'an was sent to correct it?

God promises His word endures forever (Isa 40:8; 1 Pet 1:25), and we have manuscripts of the New Testament from centuries before Muhammad that carry the same gospel. Jesus' death, resurrection, and offer of life by faith are all there (John 20:31).

The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God stands forever.”

Isaiah 40:8 (WEB)

1 Peter 1:25 (WEB)

but these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

John 20:31 (WEB)

7. Can't God simply forgive whom He wills? Why does anyone need to die for sins?

God is merciful and also just; He doesn't sweep sin aside, He pays for it Himself (Rom 3:25-26; 1 John 2:2). That's why the gift is free to us: Christ bore the cost (Rom 6:23).

whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance; to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time; that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus.

1 John 2:2 (WEB)

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23 (WEB)

8. If salvation is only by believing, won't people just sin freely?

Sin still has real consequences for a believer: God's discipline and lost reward (Heb 12:6; 2 Cor 5:10). But life itself is a gift, and grace teaches us to live godly lives out of gratitude, not fear (Titus 2:11-12).

For whom the Lord loves, he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives.”

Hebrews 12:6 (WEB)

For we must all be revealed before the judgment seat of Christ; that each one may receive the things in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

9. There are many paths to the same summit. Why insist Jesus is the only way?

Jesus Himself made that claim, so honoring Him means taking His words seriously (John 14:6; Acts 4:12). Different paths that require different efforts can't all lead to a free gift that requires none (Rom 4:4-5).

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

John 14:6 (WEB)

There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved!”

Acts 4:12 (WEB)

Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed. But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.

Romans 4:4-5 (WEB)

10. Karma says we reap what we sow over many lifetimes. Isn't that just?

The Bible agrees sin has consequences, but it says we live once and then face judgment (Heb 9:27). Grace is the opposite of karma: Christ took what we earned so we can receive what we never could earn (Rom 6:23; 2 Cor 5:21).

Inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment,

Hebrews 9:27 (WEB)

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23 (WEB)

For him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (WEB)

11. Through yoga, devotion, and good deeds I can eventually reach liberation (moksha). Why do I need a Savior?

No amount of effort erases the debt we already owe (Rom 3:20, 23). Jesus offers eternal life as a present possession the moment you believe, not after lifetimes of striving (John 5:24; 6:47).

Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

Romans 3:20 (WEB)

for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;

Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life.

John 6:47 (WEB)

12. Jesus can be one of many avatars or gods. Can't I add Him to my devotion?

Jesus didn't present Himself as one option; He is the one Mediator and the only Son (1 Tim 2:5; John 3:16-18). Trusting Him for eternal life means trusting Him alone, not Him plus other ways (John 6:47).

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

1 Timothy 2:5 (WEB)

For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him. He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.

John 3:16-18 (WEB)

Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life.

John 6:47 (WEB)

13. Isn't God an impersonal ultimate reality (Brahman) and the self ultimately one with it?

The Bible reveals God as personal: He loves, speaks, and sent His Son (John 3:16; Heb 1:1-2). We're His creatures, not pieces of Him, which is why relationship with Him is a gift He gives (John 17:3).

For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

John 3:16 (WEB)

God, having in the past spoken to the fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, has at the end of these days spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds.

Hebrews 1:1-2 (WEB)

This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

John 17:3 (WEB)

14. Reincarnation gives everyone more chances. Isn't one life unfair?

Scripture teaches one life, then judgment (Heb 9:27). But God's offer in that one life is simple and open to anyone today (2 Cor 6:2; Rev 22:17).

Inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment,

Hebrews 9:27 (WEB)

Revelation 22:17 (WEB)

15. Bhakti teaches devotion and grace too. Isn't that the same as Christianity?

Many Hindus value devotion and divine grace, and that longing is real. The difference is the object and the basis: a historical Savior who died and rose to pay for sin, whose promise of life is final and can't be lost (1 Cor 15:3-4; John 10:28).

For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

16. Suffering comes from craving; the goal is to end craving and reach nirvana. Why bring God into it?

The Bible agrees the human heart is the problem (Jer 17:9), but says the deepest problem is sin against a holy, loving God. Only He can fix it, and He offers eternal life freely through Jesus (Rom 6:23; John 3:16).

The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it?

Jeremiah 17:9 (WEB)

John 3:16 (WEB)

17. The Eightfold Path is a practical way of life. Why would I need faith?

Right living is good, but it can't remove guilt already incurred (Rom 3:20). Eternal life isn't reached at the end of a path; it's received at the start by believing in Jesus (John 5:24).

Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

Romans 3:20 (WEB)

18. There is no permanent self (anatta), so what is 'saved'?

The Bible teaches that each person is a real, lasting soul made by God and known by Him (Gen 1:27; Luke 12:7). Jesus offers that person life that never ends (John 10:28).

God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.

John 10:28 (WEB)

19. Buddhism doesn't depend on a creator God. Isn't that more reasonable?

Creation itself points to a Creator (Rom 1:20; Ps 19:1). And a God who is personal can do what a path can't: forgive and give life as a gift (Eph 2:8-9).

For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse.

20. I can work out my own liberation through effort and meditation.

Self-effort is exactly what the gospel sets aside (Titus 3:5; Rom 4:5). The relief comes when you stop working for it and simply trust Jesus' promise (Matt 11:28; John 6:47).

not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

21. Rebirth gives time to keep improving. Why decide now?

Scripture gives one life, then judgment (Heb 9:27). God's offer stands today, and it's free (2 Cor 6:2).

Inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment,

Hebrews 9:27 (WEB)

22. Wasn't Jesus a wise teacher, perhaps even enlightened like the Buddha?

Jesus claimed far more than wisdom: to forgive sins, to be the life, and to rise from the dead, which He did (Mark 2:5-10; John 11:25; 1 Cor 15:3-8). That's why His promise of life can be trusted.

Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.” But there were some of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak blasphemies like that? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you reason these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to tell the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven;’ or to say, ‘Arise, and take up your bed, and walk?’ But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—

23. God is one, formless, and beyond birth. How can Jesus be God in flesh?

The Bible agrees God is one (Deut 6:4) and also says the eternal Word became flesh so we could see Him and be rescued (John 1:1, 14, 18). God coming near is an act of love, not a lowering of God (Phil 2:5-8).

Hear, Israel: Yahweh is our God. Yahweh is one.

John 1:14 (WEB)

No one has seen God at any time. The one and only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.

John 1:18 (WEB)

Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.

Philippians 2:5-8 (WEB)

24. Liberation comes by meditating on God's Name and living truthfully and serving others. Isn't that enough?

Remembering God and serving others are good, but they can't pay for sin (Rom 3:20, 23). Jesus offers eternal life as a gift to the one who believes in Him (John 3:16; 6:47).

Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

25. Grace (nadar) is part of Sikhism too. What's different?

Many Sikhs speak of God's grace, and that's worth honoring. Biblical grace rests on Christ's finished payment, and it gives a present, permanent life that can't be lost (Heb 10:14; John 10:28).

For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

Hebrews 10:14 (WEB)

I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

John 10:28 (WEB)

26. Karma and rebirth continue until we merge with God. Why one life?

Scripture teaches one life, then judgment (Heb 9:27). In this life God offers certainty now (1 John 5:13).

Inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment,

27. All religions are paths to the one God; why exclude anyone?

Jesus doesn't exclude anyone who comes; the offer is to whoever (John 3:16; 6:37). But He alone is the way (John 14:6).

For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

28. Isn't relying on a Guru or the Guru Granth Sahib the same as relying on Jesus?

Jesus claimed to be more than a teacher: the one who gives eternal life Himself and rose from the dead to prove it (John 10:28; Rom 1:4).

I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

29. Wouldn't faith alone make people lazy in serving others?

Service matters and will be rewarded (2 Cor 5:10; Gal 6:9-10). It just isn't the price of eternal life, which is a gift (Rom 6:23).

For we must all be revealed before the judgment seat of Christ; that each one may receive the things in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

2 Corinthians 5:10 (WEB)

30. The Messiah hasn't come; Jesus didn't bring world peace. How can He be Messiah?

The Hebrew Scriptures speak of a suffering servant who bears others' sins (Isa 53) as well as a reigning King. Jesus fulfilled the first at His first coming and will reign at His return (Acts 1:11; Acts 3:18-21).

who also said, “You men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who was received up from you into the sky will come back in the same way as you saw him going into the sky.”

Acts 1:11 (WEB)

But the things which God announced by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he thus fulfilled. “Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send Christ Jesus, who was ordained for you before, whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God spoke long ago by the mouth of his holy prophets.

Acts 3:18-21 (WEB)

31. We are God's covenant people. Why do Jews need Jesus?

Jesus came first to His own people, and the earliest believers were Jews (John 1:11-12; Rom 1:16). Abraham himself was counted righteous by believing God (Gen 15:6; Rom 4:3).

He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him. But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name:

32. God forgives through repentance, prayer, and good deeds, as on Yom Kippur. Why a human sacrifice?

The Torah itself teaches that atonement comes by blood (Lev 17:11). The temple sacrifices pointed ahead to the Messiah's once-for-all offering (Heb 10:1-14).

For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes atonement by reason of the life.

Leviticus 17:11 (WEB)

For the law, having a shadow of the good to come, not the very image of the things, can never with the same sacrifices year by year, which they offer continually, make perfect those who draw near. Or else wouldn’t they have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having been once cleansed, would have had no more consciousness of sins? But in those sacrifices there is a yearly reminder of sins. For it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins. Therefore when he comes into the world, he says, “Sacrifice and offering you didn’t desire, but you prepared a body for me; You had no pleasure in whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin. Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come (in the scroll of the book it is written of me) to do your will, O God.’” Previously saying, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin you didn’t desire, neither had pleasure in them” (those which are offered according to the law), then he has said, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He takes away the first, that he may establish the second, by which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Every priest indeed stands day by day serving and often offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins, but he, when he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God; from that time waiting until his enemies are made the footstool of his feet. For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

Hebrews 10:1-14 (WEB)

33. Isn't the Trinity a violation of the Shema?

Christians affirm the Shema, that the LORD is one (Deut 6:4; Mark 12:29). The Bible reveals that this one God is Father, Son, and Spirit (Matt 28:19; John 1:1).

34. Torah is eternal. Why would anyone stop keeping it?

Jesus fulfilled the law (Matt 5:17), and Jeremiah promised a new covenant (Jer 31:31-34; Heb 8:8-13). Eternal life comes by faith, as it did for Abraham, before the law was given (Gal 3:6-17).

“Don’t think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I didn’t come to destroy, but to fulfill.

Matthew 5:17 (WEB)

Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was a husband to them, says Yahweh. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says Yahweh: I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people: and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know Yahweh; for they shall all know me, from their least to their greatest, says Yahweh: for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more.

Jeremiah 31:31-34 (WEB)

For finding fault with them, he said, “Behold, the days come”, says the Lord, “that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers, in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; for they didn’t continue in my covenant, and I disregarded them,” says the Lord. “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel. After those days,” says the Lord; “I will put my laws into their mind, I will also write them on their heart. I will be their God, and they will be my people. They will not teach every man his fellow citizen, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all will know me, from their least to their greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness. I will remember their sins and lawless deeds no more.” In that he says, “A new covenant”, he has made the first old. But that which is becoming old and grows aged is near to vanishing away.

Hebrews 8:8-13 (WEB)

Even as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness.” Know therefore that those who are of faith, the same are children of Abraham. The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the Good News beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you all the nations will be blessed.” So then, those who are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham. For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who doesn’t continue in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them.” Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for, “The righteous will live by faith.” The law is not of faith, but, “The man who does them will live by them.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,” that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Brothers, speaking of human terms, though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been confirmed, no one makes it void, or adds to it. Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He doesn’t say, “To seeds”, as of many, but as of one, “To your seed”, which is Christ. Now I say this. A covenant confirmed beforehand by God in Christ, the law, which came four hundred thirty years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no effect.

35. Isn't a good Jew who keeps the commandments right with God?

The law shows we fall short; no one is justified by it (Rom 3:19-20; Gal 2:16). The Messiah gives life to the one who believes (John 5:24; 20:31).

Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God. Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

Romans 3:19-20 (WEB)

yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.

36. Christians persecuted Jews for centuries. Why should I listen?

That history is shameful and contrary to Jesus' teaching (Rom 10:1; 11:1). Jesus' offer of life comes from a Jewish Messiah to His own people first (Rom 1:16).

Brothers, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God is for Israel, that they may be saved.

37. Isaiah 53 is about Israel, not one man.

The servant is pierced for others' transgressions and is silent before His accusers (Isa 53:5-7), which fits a single innocent person. Philip applied it to Jesus (Acts 8:32-35).

But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray. Everyone has turned to his own way; and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he didn’t open his mouth. As a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is mute, so he didn’t open his mouth.

Isaiah 53:5-7 (WEB)

Now the passage of the Scripture which he was reading was this, “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter. As a lamb before his shearer is silent, so he doesn’t open his mouth. In his humiliation, his judgment was taken away. Who will declare His generation? For his life is taken from the earth.” The eunuch answered Philip, “Who is the prophet talking about? About himself, or about someone else?” Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture, preached to him Jesus.

Atheism / Agnosticism

38. There's no evidence for God.

Creation's order and existence point to a Maker (Rom 1:20; Ps 19:1). The clearest evidence is Jesus' resurrection, attested by many eyewitnesses (1 Cor 15:3-8).

For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse.

Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers at once, most of whom remain until now, but some have also fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all, as to the child born at the wrong time, he appeared to me also.

39. Science explains everything; we don't need God.

Science describes how nature works; it doesn't explain why there's anything at all or why it's orderly (Col 1:16-17; Heb 11:3).

For by him all things were created, in the heavens and on the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things are held together.

40. If God exists, why is there so much evil and suffering?

The Bible says evil comes from rebellion against God, and God Himself entered our suffering and defeated death (Rom 5:12; 8:18-23). His offer of life is the answer to evil, not an avoidance of it (John 11:25-26).

Therefore as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; and so death passed to all men, because all sinned.

Romans 5:12 (WEB)

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which will be revealed toward us. For the creation waits with eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to vanity, not of its own will, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of decay into the liberty of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now. Not only so, but ourselves also, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for adoption, the redemption of our body.

41. I can be good without God.

Many people live decently, but God's standard is perfection, which no one meets (Rom 3:23; Jas 2:10). That's why the gift is free: it doesn't depend on our goodness (Rom 6:23).

42. Faith is believing without evidence.

Biblical faith is being convinced of something God has promised and backed with evidence (John 20:30-31). Jesus rose so people could believe on solid ground (Acts 17:31).

Therefore Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

43. I'm agnostic: I just don't know. Isn't that honest?

Honesty is good, and Jesus invites honest seekers to look at Him (John 20:24-29). If His promise is true, the one who believes has eternal life now (John 6:47).

But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, wasn’t with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” After eight days again his disciples were inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, the doors being locked, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace be to you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Reach here your finger, and see my hands. Reach here your hand, and put it into my side. Don’t be unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, and have believed.”

44. Religion causes wars and harm.

People have done terrible things in God's name, which Jesus condemned (Matt 26:52; John 18:36). The gospel itself is a free gift, not a weapon (Eph 2:8-9).

Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place, for all those who take the sword will die by the sword.

45. Why would a loving God send people to hell for not believing?

God wants no one to perish and offers life to anyone (2 Pet 3:9; John 3:16). Condemnation comes from refusing the cure He freely provides (John 3:18).

The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

New Age / Spiritual but Not Religious

46. I'm spiritual, not religious. I don't need organized religion.

Jesus didn't offer a religion of rules; He offered Himself and eternal life as a gift (John 6:47; Rev 22:17). You can receive that today without earning anything.

47. God is within us; we're all divine.

The Bible says we're made in God's image, but we aren't God, and we've fallen short (Gen 1:27; Rom 3:23). Life comes from Him, through faith in His Son (1 John 5:11-12).

48. Truth is personal: what's true for you may not be true for me.

Jesus claimed to be the truth itself (John 14:6). His resurrection is a historical claim, true or false for everyone (1 Cor 15:14-17).

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

John 14:6 (WEB)

If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, and your faith also is in vain. Yes, we are found false witnesses of God, because we testified about God that he raised up Christ, whom he didn’t raise up, if it is so that the dead are not raised. For if the dead aren’t raised, neither has Christ been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins.

1 Corinthians 15:14-17 (WEB)

49. Positive energy, manifestation, and good vibes shape our destiny.

Scripture places our destiny in God's hands, not our thoughts (Jas 4:13-15). The one thing God asks for eternal life is to believe in Jesus (John 6:29, 47).

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit.” Whereas you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. For you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.”
